Why is a Tooth pulled?
There are many reasons for tooth removal of which some could be: a large cavity that is on the root of the tooth, a broken tooth that cannot be saved, infection from a tooth gone bad, or simply needing to remove some healthy teeth to create space for braces.
How is a Tooth extracted?
Very Carefully! It all starts with an exam and xray (no cost if you are uninsured). Once an xray is taken, our dental surgeon will review with you the concerns present and reasoning for removal. At that time, a best course of action will be determined to provide you with conservative, gentle tooth extraction service so you may heal quickly and get back to the things you enjoy doing. Sometimes when a tooth is really loose, it may be as simple as numbing the tooth and then the tooth being gently pulled. Sometimes it may be more involved than that if the roots are firm and curved, requiring careful planning and comfortable skilled service.
What if I need Full Mouth Extractions?
We can handle that and keep you comfortable. Our dental surgeon has done full mouth extractions for 14+ years. We provide all the necessary steps to smooth off any areas that have healed incorrectly or that provide disturbance to your denture. We want you happy and comfortable so that you can get back to your normal quality of life.
Need Sedation for Tooth extraction?
Our dental surgeon will review your medical history and discuss options for calming any anxiety about the procedures you need. Every patient gets local anesthesia (numbing) next to the teeth being removed. We do offer Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) for those patients that do not want to be sedated and we also offer Oral or IV Sedation for those that can have a driver present and wish to be sedated. There is no one treatment fits all, we customize your plan based on your needs. Our duty is to guide you on the options.
What can I eat after having a Tooth removed?
Generally a tooth extraction is not as involved as wisdom teeth removal. Since it may be only one tooth being extracted, you can generally get back to your normal diet quickly (same day usually on the opposite side). Avoid hard foods such as nuts, chips, popcorn, etc that can get stuck or disturb the wound site while it is healing.
Will my dental surgeon send in prescriptions after my Tooth is pulled?
Yes, we will do everything possible to help keep you comfortable for the procedure and after. Our dental surgeon sends in for pain control medications and antibiotics to help ensure a quick comfortable recovery with minimal disturbance to your daily activities. Usually we will send in for an anti-inflammatory as well as centrally acting pain control medication.
What is the recovery or aftercare like after having a regular Tooth extraction?
Generally you will avoid spitting or using a straw or anything that can cause disturbance to the wound area for about 2-3 days after the procedure. Sometimes minor swelling from a regular tooth extraction is possible, but generally lasts 2-3 days and quickly resolves. With conservative minimally invasive techniques, usually our patients get back to their normal activities within 2 days. We ask that you not run around or do any extensive physical work for about 2 days after the procedure, this helps ensure your blood pressure is stable and keeps you comfortable during healing. We will provide you with a doctor’s note if needed.
